- It's of Round of pastry.
- Prepare 250 g of mince.
- It's 2-3 of large potatoes.
- You need of Chopped onion, carrots and celery.
- You need Handful of frozen peas.
- Prepare cube of Stock.
- You need of Small tin of tomatoes.
- Prepare to taste of Salt and pepper.
- It's Knob of butter.
- It's of Egg to glaze.
Use beef, rather than lamb, and fill your pie with sautéed onions, carrots, and celery. Cottage pie is actually older than shepherd's pie. Shepherd's Pie is traditionally made with ground lamb while it's more well-known and oft-mistaken cousin, Cottage Pie, is made with ground beef. Both of these are topped with mashed potatoes.
Cottage pie pie instructions
- Fry carrots, onion and celery in a pan in a little oil. Peel and chop potatoes. Bring to the boil in a pot of salted water.
- Add mince and brown.
- Add tin of chopped tomatoes. Stir and cook for a few minutes.
- Add stock cube, a little water and frozen peas. Simmer on low for about 20 - 25 mins. Turn on the oven to 200 towards the end.
- Roll out pastry into a round tray. Prick with a fork. Add mince and spread around. Drain potatoes when cooked and mash with some butter.
- Add mash on top of mince.
- Turn the edges down. Run a fork across the mince to decorate. Add a few little knobs of butter on top. Glaze pastry with beaten egg.
- Bake for about 20-25 mins. Leave on a wire rack for 10 mins before serving :).
